Danny K. Lee, MD

Danny K. Lee is a board certified ophthalmologist who is fellowship trained in Lasik and Refractive surgery. He specializes not only in laser corrective surgery but also the new intraocular lens implants such as the Crystalens, Rezoom, and Restor lens. These lens are ideal for patients over 50 who are interested being less dependent on reading glasses and/or bifocal glasses. Dr. Lee also performs corneal tranpslants, DSAEK, and Intacs.
Dr. Lee performed his undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University and received his M.D. degree at the University of Alabama in Bimrmingham.

He then went on to train at Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland for his ophthalmology residency. Upon completeng his residency, Dr. Lee went to Louisville, Kentucky to practice for two years. From there, Dr. Lee decided to do 2 additional years of fellowship training in Lasik and Corneal Transplant surgery. His first year he did at the University of Louisville. His second year was served at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Prior to joining the Eye Consultants of Atlanta, Dr. Lee has already gained extensive experience with performing Lasik and Cataract surgery. Dr. Lee is also a cornea specialist and can surgically treat keratoconus and fuchs dystrophy.

Perhaps the most exciting surgey that Dr. Lee performs are the implantation of the Crystalens, Rezoom, and Restor lenses. This procedure is similar to Lasik for people over 50 years of age in that it corrects near-sightedness and farsightedness. Currently, Lasik can only correct distance vision for people over the age of 50 requiring them to have to use reading glasses to read. The advantage of the Crystalens procedure is that is not only corrects distance vision but it also allows one to be able to read as well without the aid of reading glasses or bifocals. Any astigmatism that the patient has can also be treated at the time of surgery with a limbal relaxing incicion.

Dr. Lee currently enjoys spending time with his wife, Dr. Kari Kubik, and his two children, Sam and Zoey. He is the Treasurer for the Korean Medical Association of Georgia and actively participates in community services.

Artificial Cornea Procedure Performed by Dr. Stephen Hamilton of Piedmont Hospital

Stephen M. Hamilton, M.D., ophthalmologist and corneal specialist at Eye Consultants of Atlanta and Piedmont Better Vision - a joint venture between Piedmont Hospital and Eye Consultants of Atlanta, Inc. - is one of the first surgeons in the world to be accredited to implant an artificial cornea in patients with corneal blindness. He performed his first of several such procedures in August.

"For more than 200 years, scientists have attempted to make an artificial cornea," Dr. Hamilton says. "Ten million people around the world suffer corneal blindness, but due to the lack of access to donor tissue, only an estimated 100,000 corneal transplants are performed each year worldwide."

The AlphaCor artificial cornea is made of a biocompatible polymer which prevents the need for immunosuppressant therapies usually required with human donor tissue. The patient's own cells grow into a spongy outer rim and hold it in place, allowing the eye to function normally.

In the two-stage procedure, the artificial cornea is first inserted into a specially created pocket in the patient's cornea, covered usually with a healing membrane from the patient's conjunctiva and allowed to heal for up to three months. Stage two involves the removal of a small section of the patient's cornea in front of the optic to make vision possible.

"Four years of extensive clinical trials in humans and 14 years of research have shown that the AlphaCor improves sight substantially in patients who are unlikely to have success from a traditional human donor transplant or do not have access to donor tissue," Dr. Hamilton says.
